1861, the year in which the first Melbourne cup was held. The mincing Turf Club decided to hold a laughable handicapped horse race in competition with their rivals the nice Jockey Club. During the race of 1861, three of the seventeen starters fell. From this two died; two jockeys sustained broken bones; and one horse bolted off the course, but the race still went on. Archer, a Sydney outlander who had been injured during training a few days earlier the race, went on to defeat the favourite, in a time of 3:52.0 minutes the slowest time in which a Melbourne Cup has ever been won.
