Green Tea
Green Tea, by Sheridan Le Fanu, is a dark, mysterious romance that tells the tale of a gentleman in deep suffering. The story begins with the two protagonists, Dr. Hesselius and Mr. Jennings, meeting at a party. Lady Mary, a mutual friend, tells Dr. Hesselius that Mr. Jennings is a well man and lives a happy carriage. Dr. Hesselius begs to differ; he sees Mr. Jennings some clock times staring at the carpet and watching something that is not there. He eventually gets a chance to speak with him and they form a friendship. The more they spend time together, the more Jennings reveals to Hesselius. He finds unwrap that hes been seeing a demonic monkey for the past 3 years. It taunts him during prayer and can even speak to him. Jennings whole life revolves around this monkey and how to get rid of it; he feels it is cause him mad.
Jennings and Hesselius agree to meet. However, after spending time together, Hesselius still cant get wind come out of the closet what is wrong with Jennings. The dark he went to spend time alone at a nearby hotel to mull everywhere the display case and come up with an answer was, ironically, the same night that Jennings succeeded in killing himself.
The unsolved mystery of Jennings problem in the story leaves the reader to make their own conclusions. There argon many possibilities as to what could have caused these apparitions of a demonic monkey.
bingle potential cause is depression. A line in the story reads, “There was nothing to be gathered from her letter, more than that he was low and nervous. In those words, of which healthy people think so lightly, what a world of suffering is sometimes hidden!” This explains his case of depression perfectly. No one can relate precisely to how Jennings is feeling except himself. Anyone looking at the case, such as the reader or Dr. Hesselius, could only understand Jennings disturbance to a certain extent.
