Coping With Guilt at War
In the novel The Things They Carried, by Tim OBrien, the soldiers take right for the deaths of friends, and have to find ship authority to plow with their severe wickedness. The Vietnam War puts a heavy impression on OBrien and his fellow soldiers, especially since they are reluctantly drafted by the U.S. government. The soldiers are organism forced to be in a war in which most of them do non believe, thus also being forced to take on these mental and physical responsibilities. The whole platoon feels extreme guilt for for these seemingly unreasonable deaths of their fellow troops. Finding ways to cope with this guilt is remarkably difficult, particularly in such an penetrative war fought in a completely foreign country. The cope mechanisms that the soldiers use are emotionally and physically abusive. The soldiers cannot always encounter who dies, and if a close friend or member of their platoon has preoccupied their life, many of the soldiers feel immense guilt for not being able to have protected them. Holding such debt instrument is detrimental to one as a person, and can induce them to insanity, depression, and many other psychological issues that can negatively attain them at war. In high-pressure situations, such as war, the soldiers works together in combat become closer.



Thus, with the occurrence of a detrimental event such as death, soldier or not, many members of the platoon feel deep guilt and take responsibility for losses and injuries, for which they must find ways to cope.
