In almost all communities, individuals with magnate and authority decide the way the public thinks and behaves. If a certain individual demonstrates punishing leadership, vision and courage, the result will have a supreme effect on the community. However, if certain individuals use their power and authority to their advantage, and harass and cause great fear upon the general public, in that respect will be terrible repercussions on the entire society. The self-possession of power and authority may also dramatically variegate the way one may act. In Isobelle Carmodys clean The Gathering, many characters use their superiority and dominance for their own gain ground and to influence others. Buddha through his criminal air, physicality, and waywardness injects fear into all others; Mr Karle uses his coiffe in society, strong presence and physical aura to overtop others; and Nathanials father through his anger, jealousy and unpredictability causes grand trepidation in his immediate family. These characters all demonstrate how power and authority changes the way people think and behave and how this affects the border community.

Carmodys character, Buddha, intimidates others and uses physical force for his own advantage. An example of this behavior was when Buddha smashed up Indian and Nathanial demanding to know where they were walking.



Carmody vividly describes this characterisation; Buddha spun on his heel without warning and punched me in the stomach as hard as he could. Where were you two going? Buddha endlessly coerces people to show that he has control. Carmody skillfully portrays these deeds when her strapping and physical character, Buddha, exhibits his power towards Nathanial who is a new student at Three North. I tried to go through the gate, only if he put his hand up to stop me.
